The Warburg Institute

The Warburg Renaissance project, a research institution foundation associated with the University of London, transformed the long-neglected building, restoring its original vision and preparing it for future generations students. The project has enhanced the institute’s academic resources, teaching spaces, and public offerings while creating new facilities for special collections, exhibitions and events. The refurbishment was carried out in three phases so that the building could remain occupied and included a two-storey new build extension. Library capacity was increased and futureproofed for the next 20-30 years. Among the highlights are the Kythera Gallery, a public gallery space, and the Hinrich Reemtsma Auditorium, a 110-seat auditorium built for lectures, performances and films screenings. Other new spaces include the Wohl Reading Room, as well as the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Teaching Suite. The building space has been transformed to honour its historic character whilst providing a modern, accessible environment for scholars, students and visitors to engage with the Warburg collections.
